Black Streaks on your roof?

Looking up and seeing those black streaks is never a good thing, but what causes it?

Gloeocapsa magma, a tough algae, is responsible for the black streaks that flow down rooftops. The blue-green algae grow a dark, hardened outer covering as they collect, resulting in the black stains you observe. The algae in the shingles feed on the limestone.

Each year, the algae will get worse and more obvious, retaining moisture and causing rapid shingle ageing and granule loss.
